Raw material handling systems: screw and chain

For over 25 years, RP Engineering has been a leading company in the design, manufacture, and installation of industrial systems for drying and heat treatment of materials such as wood waste, wood chips, and biomass for pellet production. In addition to designing and building dryers of various sizes, customized according to customer requirements, it also designs and manufactures raw material handling systems: screw and chain conveyors.
In this article we will take a closer look at the two handling systems, focusing on their operating principles and differences.

Raw material handling system: screw conveyor

The screw conveyor system is the most widespread and commonly used transport system.
Suitable for modest capacity requirements, it allows reliable, clean transport protected from external agents.

RP Engineering manufactures various screw conveyor systems:

  • with or without shaft
  • with or without spiral depending on the type of use and material to be handled
  • of different sizes and lengths
  • with capacities up to 200 m³/h

The screw spirals have the following characteristics:

  • diameter between 100 and 400 mm
  • modular lengths
  • limited number of installed components
  • high thickness
  • low speeds ensuring long service life
  • minimal maintenance

The RP Engineering range of screw material handling systems includes any type of screw conveyor: tubular, channel, open trough, dosing, mixing, extraction… in order to combine process requirements with transport needs.

The open trough screw model is mainly used for transporting powdery and granular materials; it is suitable for horizontal transport as well as slight inclinations.

Screw systems within plants allow dust-free transport.

RP Engineering offers its customers a customized service. For example, for longer conveyors, intermediate supports are provided, always designed and manufactured by RP Engineering, in order to avoid possible shaft bending caused by excessive weight.
In addition, upon customer request, RP Engineering is able to manufacture material handling systems for special applications, characterized by dimensions, shapes, and materials that do not fall within standard models.

Raw material handling system: screw conveyor – operation

  1. The machine body has a cross-section defined based on the characteristics of the material to be processed and the capacity
  2. The spiral installed inside the machine rotates and, through its movement, pushes the material toward the discharge point

Raw material handling system: chain conveyor

The chain conveyor system is suitable for horizontal handling of powdery, solid, or granular materials. It is also suitable for supporting high loads and considerable conveying lengths.

In terms of durability and working resistance, chain handling systems are among the most reliable for feeding processing machines and silos. In particular, they are suitable for transporting a wide range of materials with high load capacity.

RP Engineering manufactures various chain handling systems with the following characteristics:

  • casings from 250×350 to 900×700 mm
  • different sizes and lengths
  • capacities up to 200 m³/h
  • high thickness
  • low speed ensuring long service life
  • quiet operation
  • minimal maintenance

How the chain raw material handling system works

  • The machine body consists of multiple casings, inside which a chain moves
  • As it moves, the chain drags the material along a closed circuit
  • Through an opening, the material enters the transport section of the machine
  • The chain moves horizontally, sliding along the bottom of the machine and, thanks to the presence of paddles, drags the material in the direction of motion up to the discharge opening
  • In the return phase, the chain moves at a higher level, supported by a guide coated with anti-friction material
  • On bearing-mounted shafts placed at the two ends of the machine, two wheels are installed: a driving sprocket and an idler wheel

Upon customer request, RP Engineering is able to design chain handling systems developed on different levels and that can change height or direction through the use of special fittings.

In addition, an inductive sensor can be installed at the end of the idler shaft to monitor rotation speed.
