Woody Biomass Drying Plants: Types and Operation

Woody biomass drying plants are machines designed and developed to dry wood-based materials using low-temperature thermal sources. These systems make it possible to dry materials such as bark, sawdust, and wood waste in general.
In this article, we will focus on the main types of woody biomass drying plants: we will explore the main models, describe how they work, and analyse their advantages.

What Are Woody Biomass Drying Plants?

Woody biomass drying plants are machines that use low-temperature thermal sources (such as fumes, steam, hot water, and hot air generated by other industrial processes) to dry plant-based materials.

Which Materials Can Be Processed in Woody Biomass Drying Plants?

RP Engineering studies, develops, and manufactures various types of drying systems. Some of these are particularly suitable for drying biomass, including wood used for pellet production.

What Is Meant by Woody Biomass?

Woody biomass is a renewable energy source derived from virgin wood or waste from the forestry industry, based on a system that involves the rational exploitation of forests. Examples of woody biomass include uncontaminated sawdust, wood chips, and wood shavings.

How Woody Biomass Is Used

Woody biomass is widely used in various sectors: from furniture manufacturing to construction, from the paper industry to packaging.
In recent years, woody biomass has also found extensive use in the energy sector. It has been estimated that, within the European Union, woody biomass represents the main renewable source for bioenergy production.

Woody Biomass as a Sustainable Fuel

Today, woody biomass is increasingly used as a sustainable fuel for heating, also thanks to the development of specific products such as pellets. In addition, woody biomass is also used on a large scale to power medium and large energy plants that generate electricity and/or heat.

Advantages of Woody Biomass

Woody biomass offers numerous advantages.

  • It is a clean energy source
  • It has a very low environmental impact
  • The amount of emitted CO2 is considered “neutral”, as it falls within the “carbon cycle”
  • It is very economical
  • It represents an abundantly and continuously available resource
  • It is based on ecological and sustainable use

RP Engineering Woody Biomass Drying Plants: The Two Main Types

RP Engineering designs, develops, manufactures, and installs 2 types of systems suitable for drying woody biomass:

  • belt dryers
  • rotary drum dryers

Belt Woody Biomass Drying Plants

The main feature of belt woody biomass drying plants lies in the airflow movement, which moves from top to bottom, first passing through the heat exchangers and then through the material to be dried.
The belt, made of polyester, has a very dense and highly breathable weave. Thanks to these characteristics, the belt filters the airflow while simultaneously retaining dust particles. At the same time, a centrifugal fan extracts the process air containing steam and releases it into the atmosphere.

Operation Process

  1. Woody biomass is loaded onto the dryer belt
  2. The material to be dried passes through the drying zone, which is crossed by hot air produced by the heat exchangers and drawn in by the main fan
  3. Once dried, the product is discharged

Advantages of Belt Woody Biomass Drying Plants

The belt woody biomass drying plants developed by RP Engineering represent a technologically advanced solution characterised by multiple benefits.
Let’s analyse in detail the main advantages offered by these systems.

  • Low Temperatures. The use of low temperatures is a distinctive feature of these systems. The dryers use low-temperature heat sources — such as fumes, hot water, or steam at approximately 60 °C — derived from secondary energy processes, significantly improving the overall efficiency of the system.
  • Automation. The woody biomass drying plants designed by RP Engineering are fully automated. Dedicated sensors constantly monitor the moisture level of the product, while management software optimises every stage of the process, ensuring reliable and continuous operation with minimal human intervention.
  • Low Emissions. Particular attention is also paid to emissions. In addition to operating at very low temperatures, the systems are equipped with a belt featuring a very dense weave capable of retaining even the finest particles. This solution allows emissions to remain below 20 mg/m³, fully complying with European air quality regulations.
  • Material Quality. One of the most important aspects is the quality of the dried material. Thanks to a slow process carried out at controlled temperatures, the product retains its original properties intact. Furthermore, this method prevents any direct contact with the thermal carrier, avoiding possible contamination.

Rotary Drum Woody Biomass Drying Plants

Rotary drum woody biomass drying plants are ideal for drying very moist materials with medium-small particle sizes.

Operation Process

  1. Wet woody biomass is introduced into the dryer
  2. The rotational movement pushes the material to be dried, distributing and dispersing it evenly inside the machine
  3. As it passes through the rotary drum, the product comes into contact with the hot air generated by the burner
  4. The material is then dehydrated through a triple-pass process inside the rotary drum
  5. Once dehydrated and dried, the biomass is discharged

Advantages of Rotary Drum Woody Biomass Drying Plants

RP Engineering has extensive experience in the design, manufacture, and installation of “DX” series rotary drum dryers, highly efficient systems developed to ensure maximum operational reliability.

Let’s take a closer look at the advantages offered by this type of plant.

  • Great Versatility. Thanks to the triple-pass configuration, these drying plants can process very different materials, even with non-uniform particle sizes, adapting to different temperature and airflow combinations according to production requirements.
  • Process Uniformity. The rotary drum structure also ensures excellent process uniformity. Drying takes place consistently and evenly throughout the entire cycle, avoiding moisture differences or insufficiently treated areas.
  • Very Low Emissions. The drying processes carried out in “DX” series systems produce extremely low emissions thanks to optimised design and accurate control of operating parameters, in full compliance with current environmental regulations.
  • Energy Efficiency. From an energy standpoint, these systems stand out for their high efficiency. Since they mainly use thermal energy, they require minimal electrical consumption, helping reduce operating costs and making the system particularly cost-effective over time.
  • High Final Product Quality. Since the drying process takes place at low temperatures, the treated material preserves its physical and chemical characteristics without undergoing any alteration, thus ensuring optimal results compliant with required standards.
