Woody Biomass: What You Need to Know About This Important Renewable Energy Source

The dryers designed and manufactured by RP Engineering are suitable for drying a wide range of materials of various kinds, including biomass.

In this article, we will take an in-depth look at woody biomass. We will describe the characteristics, advantages, and uses of this important sustainable energy source, which is becoming increasingly widespread.

Woody Biomass: What Is It?

Woody biomass is a renewable energy source derived from virgin wood or waste from the forestry industry. This category therefore includes wood chips, wood shavings, and uncontaminated sawdust. Its use is based on the rational exploitation of forests, which includes the protection of protected species, centuries-old trees, and historic forests.

Uses of Woody Biomass

Today, woody biomass is widely used in various sectors: for the production of furniture and wooden products, as a construction material, and for the production of paper and packaging.
In addition, woody biomass is also used as an energy source. According to Eurostat data, woody biomass represents the main renewable source used within the European Union for the production of bioenergy.

Woody Biomass Increasingly Used as a Sustainable Fuel

Wood has always been one of the most important renewable energy sources available in nature. For centuries, wood was the only method used to heat homes.

As mentioned above, woody biomass is now increasingly exploited — also thanks to the development of specific products such as pellets — as a sustainable fuel for heating purposes. But that is not all: woody biomass can also be used on a large scale to power medium and large energy plants that generate electricity and/or heat. The heat produced can also be distributed to end users within a specific geographical area through district heating networks.

In Italy, woody biomass represents the main renewable energy source used for residential heating. Data shows that more than one quarter of Italian households use energy produced from wood and its derivatives (pellets and wood chips), and that the wood-energy supply chain in Italy includes more than 14,000 companies, generating a total turnover exceeding 4 billion euros and employing more than 72,000 operators.

Woody Biomass as Fuel: Types

Fuels derived from woody biomass are classified according to their size and the standard forms in which they are produced.

On the market, we can find:

  • firewood
  • pellets
  • wood chips

Woody Biomass: The Advantages

The greatest advantage of woody biomass is that it is a clean energy source with a very low environmental impact. However, woody biomass offers many other benefits. Let’s analyse them in detail.

  • It costs much less than gas and diesel, and its price is less subject to fluctuations
  • It drastically reduces dependence on fossil fuels imported from geopolitically unstable areas
  • It pollutes far less than fossil fuels: overall CO2 savings are estimated between 89% and 94%
  • The ratio of CO2 emissions produced is considered “neutral” because it falls within the so-called “carbon cycle”: in a relatively short period of time, the emitted CO2 is reabsorbed by plants, generating new biomass
  • It allows programmable energy supply compared to other renewable sources such as solar and wind energy
  • It is based on ecological and sustainable use because it involves rational exploitation of forests while safeguarding ecosystems
  • From a quantitative perspective, it is an abundantly and continuously available resource, making it a highly reliable energy source even during periods of peak demand
  • It contributes to the circular economy because it transforms previously unused material into a valuable resource

Woody Biomass at the Centre of Progetto Fuoco Fair in Verona

Woody biomass will take centre stage at Progetto Fuoco, the trade fair taking place from 25 to 28 February 2026 in Verona, at the exhibition centre. Progetto Fuoco, an international event held every two years, is recognised as the leading trade fair for energy production from woody biomass.

Progetto Fuoco is the ideal opportunity to discover all the latest innovations and technologies in the field of woody biomass systems, used both for heating and energy production: stoves, boilers, fireplaces, as well as barbecues and cookers powered by wood or pellets.

Among the more than 550 exhibiting companies, approximately 50% of which come from abroad, RP Engineering will also be present with its own stand.

The 2026 edition of Progetto Fuoco will mainly focus on technological innovation aimed at achieving “near zero emission” generators, ensuring highly efficient combustion with extremely low emissions.
