Pellet: What It Is, What It Is Used For, and Its Advantages

RP Engineering is a company specialized in the design, construction, and installation of industrial systems for the drying and thermal treatment of wood chips, sawdust, and biomass for pellet production.
In this article, we will explain in detail what pellets are, what they are used for, how they are used, and the advantages they offer.

What Are Pellets

Pellets are a type of eco-friendly fuel. They are industrially produced through the compression under pressure of waste materials from industrial wood processing (wood shavings, sawdust, wood chips, etc.), previously dehydrated. Pellets appear in the form of small cylinders approximately 3 centimeters long and 1 centimeter in diameter.

Pellets are a 100% eco-sustainable product made from plant-based materials. In fact, the raw material must not contain any type of chemical compounds, such as glue, paints, or preservatives, which could generate harmful emissions when burned.

What Type of Wood Are Pellets Made From

Generally, pellets are derived from the processing of wood waste. However, there are also pellets sourced directly from forests managed according to specific forestry management plans.

Regarding this second type, we can distinguish various kinds of pellets based on the type of tree from which the wood is obtained. The most common pellets are:

  • Spruce wood pellets, made from white or red spruce
  • Beech wood pellets, high quality
  • Mixed beech and spruce pellets
  • Softwood pellets: composed of several softwoods (spruce and pine)
  • Chestnut wood pellets, which burn more slowly
  • Mixed pellets: made from a blend of woods (pine, beech, spruce, oak, and larch)

What Are Pellets Used For

Pellets are a compressed biomass fuel with remarkable heating power. For this reason, they are used for heating purposes: both for domestic and residential heating, as well as for large boilers and thermal power plant systems.

What Is Their Heating Value

High-quality pellets can reach 4,400 Kcal/h per Kg. To give an idea of their exceptional heating power, traditional firewood has an estimated heating value of around 2,500 Kcal/h per Kg.

Why Use Pellets: The Advantages

In recent years, pellets have become an increasingly popular type of fuel for domestic use.

The advantages offered by this eco-friendly fuel are numerous:

  • It is an eco-friendly and safe product that does not produce toxic or harmful emissions
  • It has a neutral carbon dioxide (CO2) balance because the amount of CO2 emitted during combustion is equal to the amount absorbed by trees
  • It offers high efficiency (its heating value is much higher than that of firewood or diesel fuel)
  • It is economical because it costs significantly less than methane gas and diesel fuel
  • It is convenient and compact: sold in 10–15 kg bags that are easy to transport and take up only one-fifth of the space required for firewood
  • It does not contribute to deforestation since it is produced from industrial wood waste or wood sourced from specific forest management plans
  • It can be easily sourced locally
  • It is a sustainable fuel: being derived from wood waste, it helps enhance natural resources and reduce waste
