All the advantages of the rotary drum dryer

RP Engineering specializes in the design, construction and installation of industrial systems for drying materials such as wood waste and other plant-based materials for the production of pellets and wood chips. The rotary drum dryer represents a well-known and widely used technology in industrial drying processes, capable of achieving high production capacities.
In this article, we will take a closer look at the operation of the “DX” series triple-pass rotary drum dryers, designed and developed by RP Engineering to best meet customer requirements.

What is a rotary drum dryer

Simple in operation and highly reliable, the “DX” series rotary drum dryer is a machine characterized by a very large heat exchange surface. Thanks to this feature, it is particularly suitable for drying materials with very high initial moisture content and medium-to-small particle size.

How a rotary drum dryer works

Inside the rotary drum dryer, the wet material is fed into one end of the dryer and, driven by the rotary movement, is distributed and dispersed evenly inside the dryer. Here, it comes directly into contact with the hot air generated by the burner. The product then undergoes a triple pass inside the rotating drum, and it is during this stage that the dehydration process takes place. Flowing in parallel, the hot air accelerates heat transfer and the drying process. Once the process is completed, the materials are discharged.

Below is a schematic summary of the operating process of the rotary drum dryer.

  1. The wet product is fed into the dryer
  2. The product passes through the rotating drum, where it comes into contact with the hot air generated by the burner
  3. Finally, the dehydrated product is discharged

How a rotary drum dryer is built

The “DX” series rotary drum dryers by RP Engineering are composed of the following elements.

  • Biomass burners dedicated to thermal energy production, available with either a fixed grate for up to 35% moisture content or a moving grate for up to 50% moisture content
  • Loading systems
  • Discharge systems
  • Rolling systems
  • Transmission systems

All these elements have been designed and sized to ensure continuous operation.

For the construction of its machinery, RP Engineering uses only top-quality materials and components. However, since the company offers customized machine design and manufacturing services, it is possible to request special custom solutions tailored to individual needs and requirements.

The advantages of an RP Engineering rotary drum dryer

A rotary drum dryer offers the following advantages.

Flexibility

The “DX” series triple-pass rotary drum dryers allow the drying of a wide range of materials, even with different particle sizes. They also offer various temperature/airflow configurations.

Quality of the dried product

The drying process takes place at low temperature. This allows the product characteristics to remain unchanged and also ensures that no contamination occurs between the product and the thermal carrier during the drying process.

Energy efficiency

This type of dryer mainly uses thermal energy, therefore requiring very low electrical consumption.

Reliability

The rotary drum dryers designed by RP Engineering ensure more than 7,500 hours/year of continuous operation and require virtually no maintenance.

Low emissions

By operating at very low temperatures, this type of dryer produces very low atmospheric emissions.

Automation

RP Engineering rotary drum dryers feature a high level of mechanization and automation. They are equipped with sensors that detect moisture levels and with process management software. Remote control is also possible.

Other advantages

The “DX” series triple-pass rotary drum dryers manufactured by RP Engineering are also characterized by:

  • High production capacity
  • Uniform product drying
  • Adaptability to material properties
